About the artist

Joan Miró (1893–1983), born in Barcelona, Spain, was a Catalan painter, sculptor, and ceramist best known for his work in Surrealism and his distinctive visual language of biomorphic forms and symbolic imagery. He began studying art in Barcelona in 1912, and in 1920 moved to Paris, where he took classes at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and became friends with Picasso, Max Ernst, Hans Arp, and Magritte.

Miró developed a highly personal vocabulary of signs and symbols, characterized by organic shapes, celestial motifs, and a vibrant palette of primary colors set against fields of deep blue, black, or earth tones. His time in Paris exposed him to the avant-garde circles of the early twentieth century, particularly the Surrealists, whose exploration of the unconscious and automatism profoundly influenced his artistic development. Through his friendships with leading artists of the period, he participated in the creative exchanges that shaped his approach to form and composition. His work across painting, sculpture, and ceramics demonstrated his versatility and commitment to exploring different techniques throughout his career, from large-scale murals to intimate works on paper.

Miró received significant recognition during his lifetime, including the prize for graphic art at the Venice Biennale in 1954 and the Guggenheim International Award in 1958. He was an honorary doctor of Harvard University and the University of Barcelona, and in 1979 received the very first Medalla d'Or de la Generalitat, the highest honour awarded by the Catalan government. These distinctions reflect his standing within both the international art world and his native Catalonia, where his legacy continues to inspire contemporary artists.
