Description
A hand-knotted Bird of Paradise rug, woven in Afghanistan on a soft oatmeal ground and filled edge to edge with a garden of paradise: flowering trees, peacocks, pheasants, cranes, songbirds, tortoises and small animals in teal, turquoise, olive, rust, gold and deep navy. Hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation, knotted by hand.
The wool has a soft lustre and a dense, even pile. The oatmeal ground carries the gentle horizontal movement of hand-spun yarn, which gives the field depth and keeps such a busy design from feeling flat.
Every tree in the field is different - a tree of life repeated in a dozen variations, some in blossom, some bare, each with its own birds settled in the branches or standing beneath. Between them the ground is scattered with small flowers, leaves and creatures, so the rug rewards looking at closely while still reading as one calm neutral field from standing height. There is no border and no central medallion; the garden simply runs to the edges, finishing in the original hand-tied fringe with coloured accents.
Hand-knotted with a full even pile throughout, no wear, no repairs, no odour. Selvedges and fringes are intact and original.
Measuring 96 by 120 inches, this is a standard 8 by 10 that will carry a living room seating group with the front legs of the furniture on the rug, or a dining table for eight. The neutral ground makes it far easier to place than most pictorial rugs, and it works in transitional, contemporary, farmhouse and eclectic interiors - and it is the rug children and guests will sit down on the floor to look at.
