Description
A hand-knotted area rug in the Sultanabad design, worked on a soft silver-grey ground with an allover garden pattern in teal, rust, gold, crimson, ivory and deep brown. Woven in Afghanistan by hand, knot by knot, in hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation.
The wool has a soft lustre and a dense, even pile, and the grey ground carries the gentle tonal movement of hand-spun yarn rather than the flat uniformity of machine colour. The palette is deliberately restrained in the ground and lively in the detail.
The field is drawn as a continuous garden: palmettes, pomegranates and open rosettes on fine curving vine work, spaced evenly across the grey without a central medallion, so the rug reads as pattern rather than as one focal point. A wide main border of flowering branches on grey is framed by a running vine guard and fine barber-pole stripes, and both ends finish in the original hand-tied fringe with coloured accents.
Hand-knotted with a full even pile throughout, no wear, no repairs, no odour. Selvedges and fringes are intact and original.
Measuring 97 by 121 inches, this is a standard 8 by 10 that will carry a living room seating group with the front legs of the furniture on the rug, or a dining table for eight. The grey ground makes it unusually easy to place - it sits with cool and warm palettes alike, and works in transitional, modern, traditional and contemporary interiors.
