Description
A vintage handwoven Maimana kilim from northern Afghanistan, overdyed in a warm terracotta. Maimana, in Faryab province, is the flatweave heart of the country, and this piece has been given a single-colour dye bath in the way that has become its own tradition in the trade - an older flatweave brought back as one saturated field of colour.
The weave is flat and reversible, hand-spun wool with no pile. Unusually for an overdyed piece, the dark brown of the original design has held its depth through the dye, so the geometry stays fully legible rather than dissolving into texture. The rest of the palette resolves into one warm terracotta with shifts of tone across the field.
A column of large concentric diamonds runs down the centre panel, each outlined in stepped sawtooth and hooked keys with a small motif at its heart. Wide side borders carry rows of dark bowtie and H-shaped figures, and the outer bands close in running triangles and hooked scrolls, finishing at each end in banded plain weave and the original fringe.
The kilim is flat woven with no pile, so there is no pile wear. The weave is even across the field, the selvedges and end finishes are intact, and the fringe is original.
Measuring 76 by 120 inches, this is a standard room size that will hold a living room seating group with the front legs of the furniture on the rug, or a dining table for six. The warm terracotta carries a room on its own and works in bohemian, eclectic, southwestern and warm modern interiors.
