Antique 19th Century Japanese Meiji period pair of inlaid bronze cylindrical brush pots. Each is decorated with a continuous scene in high relief of shakudō, gilt, and copper, depicting quail in flight and foraging among stalks of windswept millet on one side, and swallows perched and in flight among trailing wisteria branches on the other.

Each brush pot stands on a circular base with seven feet, decorated with various insects and plants including ladybirds, grasshoppers, and beetles among morning glory. One brush pot also features butterflies, together with cicadas and bees among flowering tessen (Asian virginsbower) and grapes. Unsigned.
