Antique 19th Century French bronze, expertly modelled as a panther in mid hunt, sinking its teeth and claws into a stag. The piece bears a brown and green patina and is signed to the base ‘BARYE’. (Antoine-Louis Barye (1796–1875). A French sculptor renowned for his dynamic and expressive animal bronzes, often hailed as the master of animalier sculpture. Trained initially as a goldsmith, Barye developed an extraordinary eye for anatomical precision and movement. His works combined realism with dramatic composition. Barye exhibited widely at the Paris Salon, influencing generations of sculptors and elevating animal sculpture from decorative art to a respected fine art form. His bronzes remain highly sought after today for their technical mastery and vivid portrayal of the natural world.
