Antique mid 19th Century French 18k gold snuff box, of lobed design with chased scroll and foliate decoration, the hinged cover inset with a circular miniature portrait of Napoleon III and Empress Eugenie previously faintly signed 'Passot' (after restoration no longer visible). The box is not marked but tests as 18k gold (750/1000 standard), the box is undoubtedly made by Louis-Francois Tronquoy (1827-1871). For similar examples see Christiie's, Centuries of style sale, lot 307, 10 June 2010 and Sotheby's, Les Arts sous Influence, lot 41, 22 September 2021. Napoleon III (1808-1873) was Emperor from 1852 to 1870 and thereafter lived in exile in England. Napoleon and his wife Eugenie are buried in Hampshire.
