Antique 19th century French gilt solid silver photograph frame set on a polished agate base. The frame is of oval form with finely pierced decoration running around the edge, giving it a light, decorative quality. Two small lapis lazuli cabochons are set to the top and base, adding a subtle contrast of colour. The interior retains its original liner and oval glass. It is raised on a carefully cut and polished light-coloured agate plinth. A refined desk piece, it is signed to the reverse “Maquet, Paris, Nice”.
Maison Maquet was founded in Paris in 1841 and became known for producing some of the finest stationery and personal goods in France. The house specialised in beautifully made writing papers, visiting cards, and travel accessories, often created to order for a well-heeled clientele. With ties to both Paris and Nice, Maquet built its name on careful craftsmanship.
