A highly attractive and exceptionally scarce 21st Century gold commemorative, issued in 2019 to mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of Queen Victoria (1819–1901).
Produced for Hattons of London and issued under the authority of Alderney, this impressive Double Sovereign was struck in pure 24 carat (99.99%) gold, rather than the traditional 22 carat alloy normally associated with British sovereigns. According to the accompanying Hattons documentation, it was the first Double Sovereign to be struck in pure 24 carat gold.
The reverse takes its inspiration from one of the most celebrated designs of Queen Victoria's reign – the famous “Una and the Lion” composition first used on the 1839 five-pound piece. Here, the young Queen Victoria is depicted as Una, standing beside and guiding the British lion, an image derived from Edmund Spenser's The Faerie Queene. The surrounding legend reads “DIRIGE DEUS GRESSUS MEOS”, with DOUBLE SOVEREIGN below.
The obverse carries a finely executed portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, together with the date 2019 and the Alderney legend. A special “VR” privy mark, representing Victoria Regina, further distinguishes this commemorative issue.
