Antique early 19th Century German (Hanau) snuff box in 18-carat gold and enamel. Rectangular with canted corners, the lid is painted with a finely detailed allegorical scene of fecundity, depicting the goddess Ceres alongside a young mother and child, set on translucent blue enamel over a banded engine-turned ground. A white enamel border enriched with paillions frames the lid, while the sides feature matching blue enamel panels divided by urn form pilasters. Not initially hallmarked, possibly made in Hanau, however hallmarked with later French gold control marks.
