There is a label on the back of the frame:
"Two brasses (sons and daughters) are part of a family memorial to their parents which were originally placed in Ashridge Church. Sir Edmond Verney, the thrid son, inherited the Pendley estates from his father, and when in 1575 Ashridge became the property of Henry Lord Cheney, he established the Pendley Chapel in Aldbury Church, and brought the memorials of his parents and other members of this family from Ashridge. When Sir Edmund dies, his son, finding his inheritance incomplete, sold the Pendley estate and went to the Mediterranean where he "turned Turk" and commanded a privateer."

Note that the wood frame includes Japanese markings on the back and was probably used for something else previously.
