Robert Vickrey was an American painter best known for his meticulous work in egg tempera, a demanding medium he helped revive among postwar American artists. Born in New York City, he studied at the Yale School of Fine Arts and developed a distinctive realist style marked by crisp drawing, luminous surfaces, and psychologically charged imagery, often featuring children, bicycles, shadows, walls, and solitary figures. Vickrey was associated with the group later termed Magic Realists, and his paintings appeared frequently on the covers of Time magazine.Hhis work is held in major museum collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
