This vessel is in the style of Joseon Dynasty white porcelain maru-tsubo, or rounded jar. It features a full, rounded body, a short neck, a slightly recessed mouth, and a small ring foot. The generously proportioned body resembles a full moon, with the term referring to its rounded and harmonious form. The entire vessel is covered in a soft white glaze with a subtle milky white to pale bluish-grey tone. Areas of natural earth accretion and brownish-yellow spotting are visible on the surface, while the unglazed portion of the foot reveals a light reddish-brown tone. The restrained form and understated glaze convey the simple and elegant character of Joseon white porcelain. Joseon white porcelain was strongly influenced by Neo-Confucian ideals emphasizing simplicity, purity, and restraint. In contrast to the elaborate decoration of Goryeo celadon and the polychrome wares of the Ming and Qing periods, Joseon porcelain emphasized the beauty of form and glaze. The Maru-tsubo and Moon Jar are among the most celebrated forms of this tradition and were used for storage, tea-related activities, and as decorative objects, with some forms also deriving from utilitarian vessels.
