Description
Exceptional Art Deco style hand glazed and gilded polychrome terracotta plaque of an angel. Beautifully detailed imagery incorporates traditional stylized elements of the Art Deco period such as bell flowers, fan motifs and scrolls in the angels wings, and the linear wave pattern on the robes. Colors of the wings, background and trim detail on the robe are rich and vibrant in tones of red and sapphire blue with gilded accents. This contrasts the stark black and white of the overall garment and the flesh tones of the face, hands and feet. The halo is also gilt and has emerald hued "jewels". The plaque is constructed of individual sections secured to a cast stone base (the piece is heavy and needs good support for display). Originally the angels recessed in the walls high above the pipe organs and the altar. Provenance: Philadelphia Transfiguration of Our Lord Church, founded in 1905, built in 1928.
