A true WWII veteran bring-back estate find, amazing piece
Edo Period (1603-1867) sword, later period
Family stated that their father a WWII veteran brought it home with him when he returned to the states
This sword features a decorated Kashira (pommel) with divine lion form art
The Tsuka (handle) feathers a feather Menuki (ornaments) on both sides that rests on the Same-kawa (Rayskin), then Tsuka-itothen (cord wrapping) finishing it off
Fuchi (Hilt collar) ends it
Based on great help from outside sources,
The Nakago (tang) is Mei (signature) marked, it is believed to be Echizen no Kuni..., or possibly
Echizen no Kuni Shimosaka, please use your expertise on the Mei
The opening has a Fuchi (sleeve) attached
The Tsuba is signed Tsunehige, it depicts Heian-period Japanese poet and courtier Ariwara no Narihira (825880) exile when he crosses the bridge on Tamagawa river, a beautiful piece of artistic craftsmanship
Habaki (ferrel) is included and shown in last photos, along with one Seppa (spacer) as-shown
The Toshin (blade) in in very good condition, view all of the many photos
Blade shows what we believe to be blood stains on it, it shows so very well overall
The Kissaki (tip of blade) has a very small chip to it as photographed...it is small
Ha (edge of blade) has a few extra small chips towards the end of it
Wooden Saya (scabbard) is in good condition with seam split as-shown
It is finished in Nuri (lacquered/painted finish) with Ramenuri (glitter or metallic flakes)
This antique Japanese sword measures 24 3/8 inches L overall, the blade is 18 3/4 inches L
