Framed Dimensions: 22 5/8 x 25 in (57.4 x 63.5 cm)
Provenance and Authentication:
According to the Letter of Authenticity (LOA) and Certificate of Authenticity (COA) provided by the consignor, this collectible was subjected to a forensic examination. The accompanying documentation states that the signatures were evaluated with reference to multiple characteristics, including ink deposition, material and aging characteristics, stylistic consistency, and historical context. Based on the examination described in these documents, the authentication provider concluded that the findings were consistent with the attributed signatures. The LOA and COA provided by the consignor accompany the lot.
A signed figural drawing associated with Saul Steinberg, depicting two elaborately dressed mounted figures rendered in a spare and highly economical linear manner. The composition transforms the equestrian subject into an imaginative arrangement of angular contours, exaggerated costumes, sweeping plumes, and deliberately fragmented forms.
The drawing displays visual qualities closely associated with Steinberg's celebrated graphic vocabulary. Rather than relying upon conventional modeling or tonal depth, the figures are constructed almost entirely through line. The horse is reduced to an unexpectedly economical silhouette, while the riders are articulated through geometric armor-like forms and fanciful headgear. The contrast between the ceremonial appearance of the mounted figures and the deliberately understated execution creates the dry visual humor for which Steinberg became widely recognized.
The upper right bears the handwritten name "STEINBERG." Its capital-letter construction, irregular spacing, compact proportions, and lightly spontaneous execution show visual characteristics comparable to the straightforward signing manner encountered in examples of Steinberg's work.
Presented under a wide mat within a substantial wood frame, the drawing retains an elegant and highly graphic appearance, combining caricature, abstraction, and visual wit in a composition characteristic of twentieth-century American illustration and graphic art.
