Description
This early 19th-century aquatint was engraved and colored by Mr. John Clarke after drawings by George Perry.
The publication, CONCHOLOGY, OR, THE NATURAL HISTORY OF SHELLS..., was published in London, in 1811.
The sheet size is 16 3/4 x 10 3/4".
Aquatint is an intaglio technique in which gradations of tone are created giving softer printed marks that resemble watercolor washes rather than the sharp etched or engraved line.
In the aquatint process, the engraver applies a dusting of granular, acid-resistant material to the plate before placing it in the acid bath which bites into the unprotected areas.
