This piece is made in a Chinese inspired blue and white scenic pattern, similar to Canton or Blue Willow, but distinct from both. The scene is quite detailed and well done, with trees and a riverboat scene in the foreground and classical pagodas and more foliage in the center and background. The rim is very intricate with latticework panels, Chinese key designs, little butterflies and sprays of floral and foliate scrollwork. The tray itself is octagonal and made in a very useful 'well and tree' style, with a well at one end and branching channels to collect the juices from carving meat. The tray rests on two feet with the well itself forming the third support on the underside, so it is quite stable. This is an excellent and very impressive piece, and would make a stunning addition to any table setting. This platter is in great overall condition. There is one repair to one corner of one foot, pointed out in the fifth photograph, but this is not visible without turning the platter over to inspect. There is some crazing to the glaze, as is typical with Staffordshire, and some minor surface wear to the underside of the 'well' since it does serve as a support for the platter. There are no chips, no other cracks, no other breaks, and no other repairs. The platter has a small mark in underglaze blue on the underside but no other marks. The platter measures about 20 3/4 by 16 3/4 inches, LxW. The useable surface area (interior of the rim) measures about 16 x 11 inches. The height at the rim is about 2 1/4 inches.
