Cleo Hartwig (1907-1988) was a pioneering American sculptor celebrated for her mastery of direct carving-the la taille directe approach-using stone, wood, terra cotta, plaster, and bronze to distill plant, animal, and human forms into serene, biomorphic abstractions that resonate with a poetic, contemplative stillness . Her work earned her over a dozen national awards-such as the Anna Hyatt Huntington Prize, the Ellin P. Speyer Prize, and numerous honors from the National Association of Women Artists-alongside solo exhibitions at major venues like the Metropolitan Museum of Art and inclusion in permanent collections of the Smithsonian, Detroit Institute of Arts, and National Museum of Women in the Arts
