Description
Presenting an original Jacob and Josef Kohn dining chair from c. 1900.
Designed by Gebruder Thonet in 1876, the Thonet No. 18 chair was manufactured by father and son duo Jacob and Josef Kohn beginning c. 1900. The quintessential bistro chair, this sleek, simple form is still considered one of the most successful chair designs ever produced.
This guy still has the paper label affixed to the bottom that reads, "Jacob & Josef Kohn, Wien," along with a "Made in Austria" stamp. The seat is missing - there's a piece of thin metal in place - as well as a few places where the wood is damaged. Please see the Condition Details and photos for more information.
A great collector's piece and/or restoration project for the right person!
Condition:
Alterations: Original Design Modified
Imperfections: Needs Restoration
Condition Notes: The condition is described as design modified because the original seat is missing, and a thin piece of metal has been nailed in place to cover the hole.
There are some minor blemishes to the finish and a spot of old glue or other residue on the seat, as well as a few places where the wood is damaged. There is a crack in the seat where it meets one of the front legs, and it appears that a repair was previously attempted, as evidenced by nails in the surrounding area. There is also a small crack to the round stretcher in the back.
Additionally, there is a split in the wood of the seat that runs along the back edge.
Please see the photos for more detail. The piece is still fairly structurally sound but would benefit from restoration - would be a great project to take this guy back to its original beauty!
