Marshall (Arthur) Group of letters

Collection of 15 autograph and typed letters signed ("Arthur" or, more frequently, with nickname "Melodie", "Fragrance" and "Caresse"), addressed to some of his closest friends, including: Oscar-winning screenwriter Paul Dehn (one letter thanking him for his hospitality and adding "Of course there is another side to the picture and, though I do indeed respect your firm views about being TT and banning all alcohol, it does seem rather a shame that one has never been offered a drink has had to Make Do on one's own in that dear little sous-sol chambre", 9 August 1976); Oscar winning screenwriter and composer James Bernard (one letter saying "I'm keeping everything (well, nearly) crossed for The Musical and I am so delighted that things are moving and that there is no intention to stage it in any way that it is not fully Slap-Up. Oh dear, what excitement! I see myself already at the premiere in a Sketchley-fresh coffee lace, clapping my hands raw", 13 June 1978); British actor and theatre manager Anthony Danvers-Walker (letters discussing various theatre productions, social engagements and work projects); and Edith Evans, known as 'Mrs Siddons' or 'Sid' (one letter congratulating her on her performance, another thanking her for her hospitality in Jamaica); all 8vo & 4to, Pound Cottage, Exeter, 31 August 1973- 15 July 1985. ***Arthur Marshall was a British writer, raconteur and broadcaster, most famous for his appearances on the long running TV show ‘Call My Bluff’ which aired on BBC2 from 17 October 1965 to 22 December 1988.

The letters were acquired by Paul Bailey acquired these letters in the process of writing his highly acclaimed triple biography titled Three Queer Lives: An Alternative Biography of Fred Barnes, Naomi Jacob and Arthur Marshall. In the book, Bailey examines Marshall; then Paul Bailey's estate.
