The letter, addressed to Dr. William L.Laurence, Manhattan Project historian, reads in part "...There was no difference in my attitude concerning the possible use of a nuclear weapon against Germany on the one hand and against Japan on the other...my attitude would have been governed...by the view whether peace can be obtained without the use of nuclear weapons... [at the time] I came to the conclusion that such use was unnecessary...I signed the so-called Franck petition...I am now inclined to believe... [it] was a more human [sic] way and led to less suffering and loss of life than any other way that was contemplated", one page, some fading and discolouration, mild folding marks, 4to, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, 3 June 1965.
