Description
Edmund Bristow (English, 1787-1876) oil painting on board depicting a white dog with a brown spot on its ear walking in profile through an autumnal field under a dramatic clouded sky. Measures 6 3/4" H x 8 3/4" W (sight); 9 3/4" H x 11 3/4" W (framed). Good condition.
Bristow was born in Eton, Berkshire, the son of an heraldic painter. At an early age he was patronized by the Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Clarence (afterwards William IV). He made sketches of well-known characters in Eton and Windsor, painted still life, interiors, and domestic and sporting subjects. He had great sympathy with animals, some power of rendering their characteristic movements and expressions, and is said to have been a friend of and given advice to Sir Edwin Landseer.
Throughout his life, Bristow exhibited at the Royal Academy, the British Institution, and Society of British Artists.
