Description
Dating to the 1880s, this beautifully crafted chest is constructed from solid walnut and exemplifies the geometric precision and linear ornamentation characteristic of the Eastlake movement.
The piece features three drawers, each retaining its original, intricately hand-carved wood pulls adorned with fruit and leaf motifs. The facade is enhanced with decorative paneling and incised spoon carvings, hallmarks of the period's aesthetic. A graceful, tiered backsplash crowns the top, lending an elegant architectural silhouette.
The drawers are constructed using Knapp joints - also known as "pin and cove," "pin and scallop," or "half moon" joints. Distinct from traditional dovetail joinery, the Knapp joint was among the first successful machine-made joints used in American furniture production, a detail that helps date the piece to the late 19th century and reflects the era's evolving manufacturing techniques.
A wonderful example of Eastlake design, blending craftsmanship, ornament, and early industrial innovation.
