Description
Two distinct 19th-century Continental decorative boxes, sold together. Large Victorian papier-mache trinket box, plus a small hand-painted wood box. LARGE BOX is a Victorian Era (circa 1850-1880), authentic lacquer-finished papier-mache box featuring a vibrant spray of flowers inlaid with iridescent mother-of-pearl flakes framed by gold-gilt borders. Appears to have originated in England or elsewhere in United Kingdom. During mid-to-late 19th century, British workshops perfected the art of "Japanned" papier-mache using compressed paper mixed with tar or pitch to create durable, glassy black surface designed to mimic imported Asian lacquer. Interior lid retains red velvet lining, base retains original patterned paper lining. Brass hinge closure mechanism with keyhole front but does not come with key it may have been originally designed to include. SMALL BOX is 19th-century European folk art hand-painted wood box, representing regional domestic art. Artisans or homeowners during 19th-century often used solid wood utility boxes to free-hand paint with botanical motifs like the golden roses/flowers on this piece. Made with solid wood panels with dark lacquered/painted exterior with painted florals/leaves on all sides but bottom. Interior has unlined raw wood. Closes with brass hinges and decorative front latch. Both pieces in good condition. Larger box has fine craquelure, light chipping along exterior, spotting and staining on interior from past use and age. Smaller box's underside shows black finish loss, light surface scuffs, minor chipping on visible exterior surfaces consistent with age. Larger measures approx. 10.5"L x 7.75"W x 2"H.
