In 1967, it was originally designed as the album cover for the self-titled debut record of The Velvet Underground & Nico. As the band's art director, Warhol transformed a commercial record sleeve into a Pop Art symbol, and the banana became one of his most instantly recognisable visual icons. Rendered with flat, minimalist yellow-and-black colour blocks to depict the banana form, it abandons realistic detail and amplifies the symbolic visual impact. This study *Banana* stands as an iconic example of Pop Art "dissolving the boundary between art and commerce".Stamped with the Andy Warhol Foundation seal on the reverse.
