Lengthy two-page handwritten letter on white 10.25" x 8" lined paper, entirely written and signed in black ink by notorious federal prisoner Robert Stroud, famously known as the “Birdman of Alcatraz.” Dated July 7, 1955, and written to Fred E. Davis, the lengthy letter discusses Stroud’s correspondence, publishing efforts and manuscripts, financial matters, and personal observations. In very good condition, exhibiting expected age and handling wear, including scattered creasing and small brown stains. Of particular interest, Stroud discusses the fate of one of his manuscripts, writing, “The book is in the hands of publishers, but no word has been received from them. The report from the one publisher who read it was that it was very good, but not what they wanted at this time.” He concludes the letter with his distinctive full signature, “Robert Stroud #594.” A substantial and highly personal two-page letter from one of the most notorious and fascinating figures in American prison history.
