About the artist

Paul Wunderlich (1927–2010), born in Germany, was a German artist best known for his work in Magic Realism and Surrealism. In 1960, the Hamburg prosecutor seized his lithography cycle "qui s'explique" for indecency, bringing him early notoriety. Three years later, he was appointed professor at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg, a position he held until 1968.

Wunderlich worked as a painter, draughtsman, lithographer, and sculptor in bronze. His work is characterized by aesthetic, sometimes erotic depictions of the human figure in unreal compositions, executed with a cool, precise technique. He often collaborated with his wife, photographer Karin Székessy, whose photographs served as starting points for his paintings and lithographs. He also designed objects and furniture, including bronze sculptures that function as tables or chairs.

Wunderlich received numerous awards, including the Edwin Scharff Prize and honors at biennial arts exhibitions in Ireland, Taiwan, and Bulgaria. His work is held in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and The British Museum. In 1985, he became the only German artist admitted to the Paris Académie des Beaux-Arts. He lived and worked in Hamburg and France until his death in June 2010.
