A stoneware sepia brown transfer printed platter - "Minerva" made by Podmore Walker & Co., Tunstall, Staffordshire, England, circa 1834-1859.

In Mythology, Minerva was the Roman goddess of wisdom and counsel. She is shown here as the central image, lounging with two naked children. Classical in design, she is surrounded by large two-handled urns, a statue representing The Three Graces is behind her. The background shows open air archways and a floor with a geometric pattern. The geometric border has shield-shaped cartouches at each corner of a woman with an urn and scroll.

Scarce pattern.
