Hand-coiled and stone-polished black-on-black jar by Darrin Aguilar (D. Aguilar) of Kewa (Santo Domingo) Pueblo, New Mexico. The warm jet-to-charcoal surface with matte banding shows classic Kewa aesthetics-reserved, graphic motifs achieved by a traditional reduction firing that turns the clay black while design areas remain matte. Aguilar is among the contemporary Kewa potters who carried forward 20th-century Pueblo innovations in blackware sparked by neighboring communities, adapting them to Kewa form and balance.
