This vintage bamboo vintage basket with handle hat was made during the Chinese Republic Period CE 1912 - 1949. It is in a remarkably good condition. The woven bamboo basket has a glossy black lacquer finish in the entire body and red in the highlights like the handles. The woven intricate bamboo weaving is well done and in good condition. The figural painting on the cover is done in gold. The process is laborious and painstaking while painting with a skinny brush in gold paint. The painting is of an exterior scene of a garden with an ornate balustrade and tree branches. There is also an ornate pillar. The three figures represent a noble lady with an elaborate headdress and festive garments and attended by two maids with flowers in their hair and dressed in festive clothing as well. The vignette suggests a festive occasion celebrated by women. It could be the Harvest Moon Festival celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th moon, or the Double Seven Festival on the 7th day of the 7th Moon.
