Mid-Century Haitian Female Bust From Irwin and Lane

Description

The Neues Museum in Berlin possesses the legendary bust of Nefertiti, queen of the Nile. Irwin and Lane is offering an equally alluring beauty whom we discovered some years ago, a exquisitely carved Haitian sculpture of a Black woman whose striking beauty, poise, and beatific expression equals the sculptor Thutmose's representation of Akhenaten's Great Royal Wife. Carved from a solid block of mahogany - her hair Madonna-parted and carefully smoothed into a low braided chignon - she gazes out at the world: soignee, statuesque, thoughtful, assured. The artist is unknown.
