Dan Garrett developed an early interest in art through his family’s greeting card business, which gave him the opportunity to travel with his father and visit the studios of prominent Western artists including George Phippen, John Clymer, and especially Bob Lougheed. Although his college art education emphasized modern approaches that differed from his own interest in realism and the American West, Garrett pursued a largely hands-on education and was mentored by Cheyenne artist Lyle Tayson, whose guidance strengthened his skills as a painter. In 1985, he shifted his focus to sculpture, a transition solidified after studying with sculptor Edward Fraughton, and he subsequently developed a distinctive body of historically researched Western sculpture. His work draws heavily on archaeology and prehistory, emphasizing historical accuracy and detailed depictions of the people, cultures, and material life of the American West. Garrett’s practice is distinguished by extensive field research and scholarship, with summers spent traveling to study the landscapes and historical subjects represented in his sculptures.
