Description
Rich in French heraldic symbolism, this antique cast iron fireback features the Royal Coat of Arms of France in bold relief. Crafted in France circa 1750, the substantial fireback has a rectangular form crowned by a rounded arch and framed by a raised molded border. Its center is decorated with a crowned shield bearing three fleurs-de-lys, the historic emblem of the French monarchy and the House of Bourbon. Large scrolling acanthus leaves, floral details, and additional fleurs-de-lys surround the royal crest, creating a balanced and highly decorative composition.
Originally made to protect the masonry at the rear of a fireplace, the thick iron plate would also absorb, retain, and radiate heat into the room. Today, it may still be used inside a working fireplace or displayed as an architectural panel or distinctive backsplash behind a stove.
Weighing 96 pounds, the fireback is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use. Its richly textured surface, timeworn casting, and polished black and silvery iron finish emphasize the depth of the ornamentation and lend the piece an authentic 18th-century character.
