Antique Louis Philippe giltwood mirror with an early 20th-century French mirror plate stamped 1933.

Beautiful 19th-century French Louis Philippe mirror featuring a gracefully arched crest in its carved giltwood frame. It is full of character and beautifully aged with the worn gold gilt revealing the traditional red primer (called bole) underneath. The profile of this frame is a classic Louis Philippe "dome top" curve with a thick outer molding, beaded inner molding, and carved leaf inner band common in France roughly 1840-1880.

The substantial frame has lovely depth and character, with age-appropriate wear that enhances its authentic charm. The mirror plate is stamped on the back with "P.B.," most likely from P. Boussois / Boussois Glassworks and the year the glass was produced, "1933." Many 19th-century frames had their mirror plates replaced in the early 1900s when silvered glass improved. We acquired this lovely mirror in 2000 at the famous Paris antique market, Porte de Clignancourt, also called Les Puces (The Fleas).
