Utagawa Kunisada (æŒå· 国貞), also known as Toyokuni III (三代豊国), was a leading Japanese ukiyo-e artist, born in Edo (modern-day Tokyo). A student of the great Utagawa Toyokuni I, he became the most popular, prolific, and financially successful designer of ukiyo-e woodblock prints in 19th-century Japan. His vast body of work, estimated to exceed 20,000 designs, primarily focused on kabuki themes, including actor portraits (yakusha-e), and depictions of beautiful women (bijin-ga). In 1844, he adopted his master's name, becoming Toyokuni III. His influence on the genre was immense, and his prints were highly sought after both during his lifetime and by later collectors.
