This exquisite woodblock print by Tsukioka Kōgyo (1869-1927), born Hanyū Sadanosuke, captures a pivotal scene from the renowned Noh play 'Funa Benkei'. Known for his detailed depictions of Noh theatre, Kōgyo was the adopted student of ukiyo-e master Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, subsequently enhancing the tradition with his unique style. This piece, part of the 'Nōgaku Zue' series published by Matsuki Heikichi between 1897 and 1902, features the dramatic appearance of Taira no Tomomori's ghost. Note the artist's signature and red seal, affirming its authenticity. The artwork is framed with a gilt faux-bamboo frame. Dimensions are: frame 13 x 10 1/2 inches, image 11 x 8 1/4 inches.
