Description
This is an reproduction Japanese woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai titled "The Hanging Bridge on the Border of Hida and Echizen Provinces" (Hida Echizen no sakai tsuribashi). It is from the series "Unusual Views of Famous Bridges in Various Provinces" (Shokoku meikyÅ kiran). The print is an Åban yoko-e format. The full sheet measures 14 3/4 x 10 1/2 inches. The cartouche in the upper right identifies the series and title, and the signature reads "Saki no Hokusai Iitsu hitsu" (from the brush of the former Hokusai, Iitsu). The scene depicts two travelers carrying heavy loads as they cautiously cross a precarious rope and plank bridge spanning a deep gorge. This piece is a notable work of art that beautifully encapsulates the mastery of Hokusai and the unique perspective of his exploration of Japan's landscapes.
