Description
Antique American patchwork quilt featuring a bold repeating basket motif worked in red and white printed cotton fabrics. Each stylized basket is pieced from red cotton with small white floral and dotted decoration, set against an off-white cotton ground printed with tiny dark geometric motifs. The repeating blocks create a particularly strong graphic pattern across the entire quilt.Constructed from numerous individually pieced blocks and hand tied with white yarn/thread rather than conventionally quilted throughout. Finished with narrow red piping/binding around the perimeter. The reverse is covered in a plain off-white fabric.Appears to date approximately late 19th to early 20th century, circa 1890–1920. The irregularities in the individual basket forms, piecing and block alignment give it considerable handmade folk character.
Condition
Condition is consistent with age and use, with scattered staining/discoloration, toning, wrinkles, occasional seam separation or fabric wear, and some irregularity along the edges. Photographs should be consulted for condition. An appealing early American textile with a very decorative red-and-white presentation.
