Description
Offered is a large hand-painted and burnished glaze vintage 1960s toucan figurine made in Tonala, Jalisco Mexico, a province renowned for its earth-tone clay and for all the pottery and ceramic art created since the 1950s. Perched on its two front legs and resting on its tail, the toucan proudly shows his physique and profile. Signed "P Mateos" on the bottom.
The figurine is larger than most Tonala ceramics and measures approximately 11.5" Beak to tail, 9.5" tall, 5.5" deep and is created with a deep beige putty undercoat and its back is embellished with the native flower of the region painted in cinnamon, terracotta, with gray leaves, and flourishes on its feathers in white, black, and gray.

Condition Notes: Very good condition with no nicks, chips, scratches, cracks. There is a small scuff near the tail, another on the underside of the beak only seen when looking from beneath, and a bit of wear on the tips of the feet - see detailed images. Any wear is commensurate with use.
