A group of local Steubenville, Ohio, citizens founded the Steubenville Pottery Company in 1879. By the early 1900s, it was manufacturing dinnerware and toilet sets made in semi-vitreous cream-colored wares, granite ware, and semi-porcelain. Some pieces are marked "CANTON / CHINA."

Steubenville is best known for its American Modern dinnerware which it released in 1939. Russel Wright designed the shape line.
