A signed cat drawing by celebrated British illustrator Quentin Blake (b. 1932), executed in lively watercolor with a characteristically spontaneous touch. The composition depicts an elongated orange cat reclining beneath loosely rendered foliage, its wide eyes lending the animal an immediately engaging personality. A small dark creature appears before the cat, introducing a subtle narrative interaction, while transparent washes of green, turquoise, and yellow establish the surrounding landscape. Signed by Blake at the lower right.
The work displays the expressive freedom closely associated with Blake's distinctive approach to illustration. Rather than confining color within carefully controlled contours, rapid washes and fluid marks establish both character and setting, giving the image an appealing sense of immediacy. The exaggerated eyes and elongated body transform the cat from a simple animal study into a distinctly characterful figure, while the smaller creature adds an element of visual storytelling.
Quentin Blake ranks among the most influential figures in modern British illustration. Animals and imaginative creatures occupy an important place within his extensive body of work, alongside the human characters for which he is internationally celebrated. Combining a substantial animal subject, colorful setting, playful narrative, and the artist's signature, the present framed drawing offers particular appeal to collectors of British illustration, children's literature, and modern works on paper.
