Particularly noteworthy is the surviving provenance on the reverse. The original wooden backing retains a charming red-bordered handwritten gift label reading:

"From Dad, 25th Wedding Anniversary, April 5, 1927."

The larger companion portrait depicts Christ praying in the Garden of Gethsemane, after the celebrated composition by German painter Heinrich Hofmann (1824-1911).
