Description
English market cabinetry at its best!
Lovely and highly detailed Early / Mid 19th Century. "two over three" chest of drawers.
Wonderful medium brown tones with much variation and grain.
Lovely inlay on the top and drawer fronts, with beautiful all-original hardware and turned feet.
Dovetail construction of course with a nice oil around the perimeter.
Wonderful size - not too big, but plenty big enough - 36.5" across, 42" tall, 17.25" deep. 6" lift from the floor to the bottom of the first drawer - a nice craftsman touch.
Very minor losses to the veneer inlay in a couple of spots, but they do not detract. Otherwise presents as original.
Even the three-board back - which is often a rough spot on chests of this age - is straight and true.
In keeping with Aesop's fable, Fox and Crow's Motto is "Beware of False Flattery!" So, with each listing we offer a true confession about the item...
We simply love chests of drawers!
Every room in both of our cottages has at least one, because they are lovely for far more than just socks and delicates. We have TVs on them. Pairs of lamps. Large paintings. Entire collections of small works above them, and even one that supports 13 Staffordshire Spaniels. We keep linens, towels, hardware, and our necessary household tools inside them. My husband even uses one to stash all our necessary tax and household paperwork.
But, as there are many chests around to choose from, and many of them truly are "just old brown furniture," choose carefully!
This one passes every test. Wonderful coloring - check. Great and useful size - check. Fabulous brasses - check. Perfect patina of use and pedigree - check. And a reasonable price - check.
Your children and grandchildren will be glad you did...and wasn't that always the point?
