Description
An original oil painting of a white horse and rider, mid-race, mid-jump, or hot on the trail of a fox. Oregon artist Sheila Somersville has put the Jockey or rider in a traditional Georgian British Formal Fox Hunting uniform that includes a red tailcoat with brass cuff buttons, leather boots, a velvet riding cap, and tan breeches or jodhpurs.
The detail and determination captured in the horse's eyes are enchanting, and the definition of its form is quite realistic. The blurred colors of green, yellow, and orange could represent the forest or field of the hunt, abstracted.
Historically, the red jacket distinguishes the uniform as formal and the equestrian rider as a distinguished Master of Foxhounds, a title earned through family lineage and legacy, years of service, and monetary donation to the hunt.
Signed by the artist Sheila Dianne Somersville in the lower left corner. The wooden stretchers are also stamped with Sheila's name and address, confirming she lived in Oregon during the time of this painting. We estimate it was painted in the 1980s-1990s based on its condition, materials, and other original works by the artist from that period.
