Description
Exceptional pair of antique Japanese color woodblock prints by Ogata Gekko (1859-1920) dating to 1892, Meiji Period.
These beautifully detailed works are from Gekko's celebrated Genji Gojuyon-jo (The Fifty-Four Chapters of the Tale of Genji) series, depicting elegant courtly scenes inspired by the classic Japanese literary masterpiece The Tale of Genji.
Executed in traditional Japanese color woodblock technique, the compositions display Gekko's distinctive combination of delicate line work, richly patterned garments, architectural details and atmospheric landscape elements. Gekko's signature and artist seal are visible within the compositions.
Period handwritten labels preserved on the reverse identify the Genji subjects and attribute the works to Gekko, with an early date of 1892 noted. The reverse also retains an old Henry Stephen Harvey Fine Picture Framing, Palm Beach, Florida label, adding interesting Palm Beach provenance.
Presented as a matched pair under glass in handsome blue-green faux-bamboo frames with coordinating mats.
