One figure sits on the edge of a bed or bench while a second figure occupies the foreground, illuminated by cool blue light against a predominantly dark background. A television at left and a vivid red accent across the bed introduce contrasting points of light and color. Executed with expressive, atmospheric handling in deep blue, black, gray and red tones, the work reflects Johnston's interest in figurative subjects and interpersonal relationships. Inscribed "Two Figures - Phone - T.V. - Study" at lower left and signed "Johnston Matthew" and dated 1985 at lower right. Presented under glass with a wide gray mat in a black frame.
