Description
A tiny Bermuda landscape that feels like a souvenir from another era.
This signed vintage painting depicts St. David's Lighthouse in Bermuda, its distinctive red-banded tower rising beyond a garden path framed by lush island foliage. Two diminutive figures stroll beneath the trees, giving the scene a wonderfully leisurely sense of scale and place.
The palette may be its best feature: seafoam and sage greens mingle with sandy neutrals, blush pink, cream and flashes of coral red. Rather than rendering the landscape precisely, the artist allows flowers to become dabs of pigment and foliage to dissolve into loose layers of color. The result has the easy, almost illustrative quality of midcentury travel art.
The painting is signed at lower left, and it remains in what appears to be its original painted wood frame, with a creamy ivory face surrounded by a deep green edge. Naturally acquired rubbing and paint loss reveal glimpses of the wood beneath and give the frame particularly good vintage character.
The original aged paper backing also remains in place and has not been replaced. Based on the painting, framing and construction, we estimate the piece to date to approximately the 1950s-1960s.
A particularly appealing small-scale piece for a collected gallery wall, coastal interior, Bermuda home or layered traditional room.
Measures approximately 11.75" tall by 9.75" wide by 1.5" deep.
In good vintage condition with wear consistent with age. Painted frame shows scattered rubbing, paint loss and exposed wood, particularly along the outer edges. Original paper backing is significantly aged with cracking, tears and losses. Painting presents well.
