A hand-knotted area rug in the classical vase design, woven in Afghanistan on a soft ivory ground with turquoise, navy, forest green, rust, gold and grey. Hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation, knotted by hand.

The ivory ground carries a strong horizontal abrash - the natural banding that comes from hand-spun yarn dyed in small batches - which gives a pale field real depth and movement instead of the flatness of machine colour. The wool has a soft lustre that catches the light differently as you cross the room.

Vases and baskets filled with fine lattice sit at the centre line and along the axis of the field, each sending up a spray of palmettes and blossoms on slender vines. Between them large open flowers in turquoise, navy and rust are set at regular intervals, so the design reads as ordered rather than crowded. Three concentric borders frame it - a wide band of palmettes and serrated leaves between fine floral guard stripes - and both ends finish in the original hand-tied fringe with coloured accents.

Hand-knotted with a full even pile throughout, no wear, no repairs, no odour. Selvedges and fringes are intact and original.

Measuring 68 by 93 inches, it suits a dining table for four, a bedroom under a queen bed, a study, or a seating area within a larger room. The ivory ground is the easiest of all to place - it lightens a dark floor, sits with warm and cool schemes alike, and lets the turquoise do the work. It suits transitional, coastal, contemporary and traditional interiors.
