An unusual pair of vintage Maitland-Smith-style torchbearer candlesticks with enough sculptural presence to display beautifully even without candles. Attributed to Maitland-Smith, each modeled as a turbaned attendant or torchbearer in richly detailed Eastern-inspired dress.

Each figure holds a substantial candle cup aloft in one hand while resting the other confidently at the hip. The sculptural figures are wonderfully detailed, from their plumed turbans and embroidered-style jackets to wrapped sashes and deeply folded harem-style trousers. Raised foliate, arabesque and geometric decoration continues across the costumes and candle cups, while each figure stands upon a substantial turned pedestal base.

The dark brown bronze and brass-toned finish has developed an appealing aged patina, with rubbing along the raised details revealing warmer metallic tones beneath. The effect emphasizes the appearance and intricate modeling of these unusual decorative objects. They would be especially handsome flanking a mantel, arranged among books and objects in a library, placed on a console or bar, or used as an unexpected pair of dining-table candlesticks.
